Jesus was saying that they (the Pharisees) were meticulous in small, meaningless matters (they strained gnats) yet they ignored large matters like mercy, forgiveness, and love (by, figuratively, swallowing camels).<br /><br />One way to understand the passage is to think of it this way: if one swallows camels yet only "strains" gnats, then one could be said to be full of something. In reading this passage (or Matthew 23, for that matter), Jesus was telling the Pharisees, in a non-vulgar way, that they were full of sh--. <br /><br />Jesus is pretty nasty here, calling them blind, hypocrites, snakes, whitewashed tombs, and the descendants of murders. Jesus was quite nasty to those who deserved it.
