You Strain Out a Gnat But Swallow a Camel

I have many friends who read the Bible and journal and gain profound insight and wisdom and are able to eloquently express and articulate what they have learned . I guess I'm wired a little differently! As I was reading Matthew 23 (specifically 23:24) this morning this image came to mind. :)

I really like that picture. I am going to have to get my bible and look up the passage when I get home.

Meticulous Jews of Jesus' day would strain their wine so that they didn't accidentally swallow gnats and other insects as this was forbidden under the Jewish law of the day. Jesus was saying that they (the Pharisees) were meticulous in small, meaningless matters (they strained gnats) yet they ignored large matters like mercy, forgiveness, and love (by, figuratively, swallowing camels).

One way to understand the passage is to think of it this way: if one swallows camels yet only "strains" gnats, then one could be said to be full of something. In reading this passage (or Matthew 23, for that matter), Jesus was telling the Pharisees, in a non-vulgar way, that they were full of sh--.

Jesus is pretty nasty here, calling them blind, hypocrites, snakes, whitewashed tombs, and the descendants of murders. Jesus was quite nasty to those who deserved it. No wonder they killed him.

Hi Annie,

I love your artwork. I hope that you don't mind that I borrowed this picture to illustrate a post on my own blog. I have, of course, given you due credit...and a link!
