Finding Paintings In Random Photos - Girl In Surf

Girl In Surf
16"x 8"
acrylic on canvas

I painted this little girl to go with the little boy painting I posted on 6/15/2010 . I painted them side by side to make sure that I captured the same color and light. I found both of these children while searching through random photos I took at Newport Beach in southern California.

The little girl is easy to see at the right side of the picture.

The little boy is harder to find, but he is also on the right side of this picture.

By taking random photos, I am able to capture spontaneous and natural postures that may only last a moment.

I am always excited to see what I have captured when I go searching through the photos after I've loaded them on my computer. I often find several moments to paint in each photo or combine elements from several photos.

Really, I'm not a very good photographer so I am THRILLED if I find something to paint! Taking 'random' photos is my cover for not taking 'good' photos! ;)

Both of these paintings are lovely. Your brushstrokes are so painterly and your colors are vibrant. You did a great job in capturing the light and the feel of a day at the beach. Well done!

I love capturing photos of children at the beach... sometimes, however I get weird looks from adults so I need to learn to be more covert.

Great job!

Like you paintings. I thought the beach scenes were too sunny to be Oregon!

I'm the same way! I go crazy taking pictures when I'm out because I hope to capture something unexpected. The painting is lovely. The tiered ocean surf in the background is ridiculously eye-pleasing.

That's a great idea to take pictures and create a painting from a piece of it. Ingenious way of creating spontaneous, natural paintings!

Hi Annie!... "Random" often works out well in everthing one does in life!

Too often in this day and age things are planned to the point... that they become "muddied"... and lose their vibrance and spontoneity... especially where painting is concerned.

Your work does not at all suffer from over-the-top palnning and execution. IT is always... direct... vibrant in subject matter... colour and in brushwork.

Bravo! Keep up the good work!

fun that you should show photo and how you interpreted it on canvas. I like that you added alittle more "it's colder than i thought" to the figure's image. nice annie:)

I'm another random photographer who sometimes finds wonderful gestures... often in the corners of the shot.
If I took the time to get a "good" photo, I'd miss the moment.
I think our technique is greatly helped by digital cameras!
Love you little girl framed by the glistening water. Very very nice.

Annie thanks for sharing your approach to composing and rendering from spontaneous photographic sources, I think it's great way of gathering unselfconscious people poses.
